OCPA Launches Community Choice Energy Service

More than 38,000 Orange County business accounts will now have access to renewable energy

IRVINE, Calif. (March 31, 2022) – The Orange County Power Authority (OCPA) today announced it begins service tomorrow by delivering energy choice to more than 38,000 business accounts across the cities of Buena Park, Fullerton, Huntington Beach and Irvine.

OCPA’s 3-tier program allows businesses control over energy consumption like never before. Customers can choose from OCPA Basic Choice, equal in cost to Southern California Edison (SCE), Smart Choice, which provides 69% renewable energy, or 100% renewable energy.

“Businesses both small and large in Orange County are taking bold steps by choosing renewable energy options with the Orange County Power Authority,” said Mike Carroll, OCPA Chairman. “Giving customers the power of choice and the opportunity to shift toward clean energy is a groundbreaking new front in addressing our environment and the sustainability of our communities.”

Before OCPA, energy used by businesses came from a single mixture of non-renewable sources like coal, oil and gas. OCPA gives local communities the power to procure their own electricity and make choices about renewable energy content. The move to cleaner energy replaces the fossil fuels with wind, solar, geothermal, and hydro-generated electricity. SCE still provides power transmission to customers, and both SCE and OCPA work together to ensure electric service reliability.

OCPA is part of a power grid of hundreds of California cities benefiting from community choice energy. There are no duplicative charges or costs of any kind related to this energy partnership. In addition to offering stable rates and three choices of renewable power, OCPA’s revenue is reinvested into local infrastructure, helping to support economic growth, job creation, and critical neighborhood projects.
