OCPA Takes Bold Steps to Provide Cleaner Power at Competitive Rates

Irvine, Calif. – The Orange County Power Authority (OCPA) announced today that its member cities have selected the renewable energy plans that will power their communities – taking bold steps to address climate change. 

• Buena Park – 100% renewable energy
• Huntington Beach – 100% renewable energy
• Irvine – 100% renewable energy
• Fullerton – 70% renewable energy

OCPA Member cities offer cleaner energy at competitive rates, and three cities selected 100% renewable energy for their residents and commercial businesses.

“Upon launch, OCPA expects to be the greenest Community Choice Energy program in the State of California,” said Mike Carroll, OCPA Chairman. “This demonstrates extraordinary environmental leadership on the part of our member cities to ensure a healthier and more resilient future for us all through the Orange County Power Authority.”

The annual reduction in carbon emissions will exceed nearly one million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent or MTCO2e. “OCPA’s reduction in emissions through its renewable energy is equivalent to taking over 200,000 cars off the road,” continued Carroll. “That’s real and meaningful progress toward our shared goals.” 

OCPA’s tiered program allows all customers total control over their renewable energy consumption and environmental responsibility. Customers can choose from 38% renewable, which is currently the same cost as Southern California Edison, 69% renewable, or 100% clean energy. 

OCPA will launch commercial service this April, with residential service starting this Fall. At full launch, OCPA will serve over 820,000 residents, making it the sixth-largest Community Choice Energy program in the State of California. 

In 2002, the State of California gave local communities the power to procure their own electricity. Today, OCPA is part of a grid of hundreds of California cities benefiting from Community Choice Energy programs. Formed in 2020, OCPA plays a large part in making Orange County a more resilient, independent, and healthy place to live. Southern California Edison still provides power transmission to OCPA homes and businesses, and SCE and OCPA work together to ensure electric service reliability. There are no duplicative charges or costs of any kind related to this energy partnership.
